The study applies Metz’s theory of Ubuntu as an antidote to corruption in Malawi. It argues that Metz’s theory is key in curbing corruption in Malawi. Due to its emphasis on the community (social harmony) and other-regarding virtues, it clarifies the need for community involvement in fighting against corruption and promoting Ubuntu values. Ubuntu means humanness. The theory is summarised by the Zulu aphorism umuntu ngubuntu ngabantu translated that ‘a person is a person through other persons’. Metz theorised the theory in the principle that actions are morally right when they promote shared identity and good-will, and wrong when they foster division and ill-will. This theory promotes other regarding virtues and underlines social harmony as a fundamental component in the understanding of Ubuntu. This is contrary to the current setting where Malawi is sticking to individualistic thinking which is fueling corruption. This study advocates for the integration of Metz’s Ubuntu moral principles into public morality as a means of fostering character formation.
