Urban solid waste management (SWM) remains a critical challenge in Malawi, characterized by inefficient collection systems, limited real-time monitoring capabilities, and inadequate public engagement. To address these systemic issues, this study presents a data-driven Waste Management System (WMS) designed to optimize waste collection efficiency, enhance revenue accountability, and promote community-based recycling initiatives. The proposed WMS integrates IoT-enabled trash can and skip bin sensors, a web-based administration portal, an Android mobile application, and USSD protocols to support seamless communication across all levels of operation (waste generator, collectors & council). Real-time data collected from sensors embedded in waste bins is transmitted via IoT devices to a centralized database, enabling dynamic task allocation, real-time service tracking, and public reporting of illegal dumping activities through the mobile and USSD platforms. Pilot testing of the system in Zomba City, implemented in collaboration with the Zomba City Council, demonstrated measurable improvements in collection efficiency and reduced operational costs. These results highlight the transformative potential of IoT-enabled and citizen-driven digital tools in redefining SWM as a transparent, responsive, and adaptive urban service. The project was funded by UNDP Malawi, accelerator labs.
